Color PPF vs vinyl wrap: what's the difference?

By Motorsport Wraps · STEK Certified Installer ·

Want a new color? You have two films to choose from. They look similar on day one, but they're very different materials.

Vinyl wrap

A vinyl wrap is a thinner film made for changing color. It comes in a huge range of colors, finishes and custom prints, which is why it's the go-to for commercial wraps and liveries like our McLaren 720S. It covers the paint, but it isn't built to stop rock chips.

Color PPF

Color PPF is paint protection film with color built in. It's a thicker urethane film made to take chips like clear PPF, and many films heal light swirls with heat. The tradeoff is a smaller range of colors and a higher price.

How to choose

  • Want a wild color, a print or a logo? Go with a vinyl wrap.
  • Want a new color and real chip protection? Go with color PPF, like the grey olive Cybertruck in our portfolio.
  • Love the factory color? Keep it and protect it with clear PPF.

Either way, a ceramic coating on top makes the film easier to keep clean.
